From Passion to Purpose: My Journey as a DPG Open Source Community Manager
Open source isn’t just about code; it’s about community, collaboration, and creating solutions that make a difference. When I joined the 2024 cohort of the Digital Public Goods (DPG) Open Source Community Manager Program, I saw an opportunity to contribute to something truly impactful, supporting projects designed to tackle global challenges while aligning with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Why I Joined the Program
As someone passionate about open source and its potential for social impact, I was immediately drawn to the DPG program. Its focus on connecting community managers with open source projects that address critical global needs aligned perfectly with my interests. This program wasn’t just about managing communities; it was about being part of a movement that leverages technology for good.
About the DPG Open Source Community Manager Program
The DPG Open Source Community Manager Program, by GitHub Social Impact, aims to strengthen the ecosystem of Digital Public Goods (DPGs). Participants receive specialized training, collaborate with DPG maintainers, and work part-time over six months to engage external contributors and amplify the impact of these projects. To learn more about the program, including its timeline and application process, visit the official GitHub announcement page.
What Are Digital Public Goods?
Digital Public Goods are open source solutions adhering to the DPG Standard, which ensures alignment with the SDGs, privacy best practices, and more. These tools range from health information systems to data mapping applications. The Digital Public Goods Alliance (DPGA) plays a crucial role in maintaining the DPG registry, where recognized projects are showcased for broader discoverability.
My Role with HERA Digital Health
I was paired with HERA Digital Health, a project dedicated to improving access to health resources for refugees. HERA’s mission is to support vulnerable populations, particularly refugees, by increasing access to vital healthcare services. My role involved enhancing HERA’s GitHub presence, writing helpful documentation and tutorials, and strategizing ways to build an active community around the project.
The Impact of Digital Public Goods
The program highlighted the vital role of DPGs in addressing global challenges. By supporting projects like HERA, the program empowers open source contributors to drive meaningful change. For instance, tools like DHIS2 and CommCare have already made significant strides in public health, showcasing what’s possible when technology is harnessed for good.
For me, this journey has been transformative. It reinforced the idea that even small contributions can have a ripple effect, impacting communities far beyond what we might initially imagine.
If you’re passionate about open source and social impact, I encourage you to explore the DPG registry and consider contributing to these incredible projects. For those interested in programs like this, keep an eye on the GitHub Social Impact page for future opportunities.
